Abstract
A reticulate non-woven web materialwhich may be used for many purposes, for example in making lamp shades, place mats, tea bags, or as a ply in a laminate - is formed by depositing on a wire screen which has a mesh size less than 50 and a plurality of upstanding knuckles formed by the warp strands crossing the weft strands a fibrous slurry to form a lightweight web in which there is a relatively low fibre concentration on the knuckles and a relatively high fibre concentration between the knuckles. The slurry may contain wood, cotton, hemp, rayon, nylon, acrylic, vinyl, polyester, synthetic cellulosic, asbestos, quartz, or glass fibres, and also dispersing agents. The wire screen preferably has a mesh of between 8 and 45 strands/inch. The weft strands are monofils and are straight while the warp strands are preferably multifilaments strands and bend under and over the weft strands. The weave is preferably plain and the strands may be of bronze, stainless steel, or a plastics. Various examples of screens are given. The paper-making apparatus used may be one in which an upwardly inclined stretch of the wire screen forms one side of the headbox or may be a Fourdrinier or cylinder machine. In one example a slurry of hemp and bleached kraft wood pulp was fed to a headbox of the above mentioned inclined wire paper-making apparatus and a very dilute slurry of fibres of hemp, wood, and a copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride was fed to the exit end of the headbox, and a two phase heat seal paper was formed as in specification 621823. Tea bags were made from this paper. In another example a web after having been dried was saturated with a latex dispersion of a copolymer of acetate and an acrylic monomer.
