[Also in Group XVIII] A panel, plaque, shield or like sign having lettering and/or relief or intaglio ornamentation on its face is made by applying a coating of fibrous web material 3 over a mould surface of the required shape, positioning mould elements 5 on said coating at least in the case where said surface is unrelieved, and applying a layer 7 of fibre-reinforced hydraulic plaster over the web coating, and mould elements, where provided, allowing the assembly to set and then removing the resulting moulding. Preferably, after the moulding has dried sufficiently, it is impregnated on one or both sides with a synthetic resin solventless cement 8 such as a styrenated unsaturated alkyd cement. The sheet 3 may be of hessian, cut slightly larger than the mould base, softened in water and with the edges 4 pressed against the mould sides. Next, the desired sign wording is built up by positioning on the hessian, greased letters 5 in mirror-image form. When the lettering is complete, the body 7 of the sign is built up around it from, for example, pieces of hessian 6 soaked in a mixture of water and plaster of Paris and containing a urea-formaldehyde resin as reinforcing and waterproofing agent. The letters 5 are removed after the plaster has set hard and, if enhanced daylight visibility is required, the exposed hessian 9 can be cut away and the spaces filled with coloured plaster or translucent polythene inserts 10.
