Abstract

The invention comprises esters of 4,6-dinitro-2-sec.-butylphenol with a mono- or di-carboxylic acid, particularly acetic, methoxyacetic, chloracetic, isobutyric, sorbic, stearic, oleic, dimethylacrylic, b -methyl-b -n-propylacrylic, phenylacetic, phenoxyacetic, adipic, benzoic, 2,4-dichlorobenzoic, 3- and 4-nitrobenzoic, 2-nitro-4-chlorobenzoic, 2-chloro-5-methylbenzoic, p 2-hydroxybenzoic, 2-methoxybenzoic, hexahydrobenzoic, cinnamic, and phthalic acids. The esters may be prepared by the action of the appropriate acid chloride or acid anhydride on 2,4-dinitro-2-sec.-butylphenol or a metallic derivative thereof. The esters are effective insecticides (see Group VI).ALSO:Pesticidal compositions comprise a solid or liquid diluent and a mono- or di-ester of 4 : 6-dinitro-2-sec-butyl phenol. Specified esters are those with sorbic, benzoic, acetic, o-phthalic, oleic, b : b -dimethylacrylic, b -methyl-b n-propyl acrylic, and iso-butyric acids. Other esters mentioned are those with methoxy acetic, cinnamic, chloracetic, phenylacetic, stearic, adipic dichlorobenzoic, 3- and 4-nitrobenzoic, 2-nitro-4-chlorobenzoic, 2-chloro-5-methylbenzoic, 2-hydroxy-benzoic and 2-methoxy-benzoic acids. The compositions may be in the form of dusting or spraying preparations in association with inert materials, solvents, e.g. cyclohexanone, acetone, butanol, xylene and emulsifyers e.g. polyoxylated nonyl-phenol, oleic acid methyl-tauride. Other insecticides, acaricides, fungicides and ovicides may also be present.
