855,277. Making reinforced pipes. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Sept. 9, 1959 [Sept. 18, 1958], No. 30749/59. Class 99(2). In a method of manufacturing pipes from hardenable plastic material reinforced with a fibrous material e.g. glass fibre, the two materials are applied on to a mandrel which consists of a tightly wound helix of thread of rectangular cross section, the plastic material being subsequently hardened by heating and the helix removed by stretching it to reduce its transverse dimension. The helix may be applied around a rotating smooth rod or form by itself a non-rotating mandrel. As shown, a bundle of glass fibres 1 is guided by rolls 3 through a bath of plastic material 4, the fibre bundles being evenly distributed, by means of a disc 5 around the mandrel 10. The mandrel and the fibre bundles are then drawn through a mouth piece 7 but are first provided with a braiding of glass yarn from spools 6. Surplus plastic material passes to container 4 after being pressed through the braiding, whilst the mandrel and surrounding plastic pipe is passed through an oven 8 wherein the plastic material is hardened.
