Abstract
854,945. Assembling force-fits. AMP Inc. March 13, 1959 [March 27, 1958], No. 8826/59. Class 83 (4). A tool for inserting an object, e.g. a taper pin, into a receptacle and then applying a test withdrawal force to the object, comprises a body and a member slidable with respect to the body for engaging the object and a spring detent for maintaining the member in a given position with respect to the body until the force between the body and the member is the test force. The taper pin 2 is crimped to an electrical conductor 10. The tool includes a spring-loaded rod 14 having a longitudinal recess 16 for receiving the crimped portion of the taper pin. The conductor 10 lies in an enlarged recess 18 in the rod. The tool body 26 accommodates the rod and also houses an impact hammer 66. A coil spring 36 surrounding the rod engages a collar 30 which forms a ball-race with a bushing 42. A bevelled surface 38 on the ball-race urges the ball bearings into an annular recess 48 in the rod. A latch 52 locks the taper pin in the recess 16, and an ear 56 on the latch extends into a radial slot in the collar 30. The hammer 66 and the body 26 have a slot 69 through which passes a pin 70 mounted in an outer handle 72. The hammer is operated by a spring 84. A second spring 78 urges the body 26 out of the handle 72. A spring-loaded detent 90 in the hammer engages in a cam groove 96 in the handle 72 so that the detent releases the hammer when the handle is moved towards the pin to insert it in the receptacle. After the hammer has delivered its blow the pin is still engaged by the rod. Removal of the pin from the recess 16 is effected by pulling on the handle 72 whereupon a withdrawal test force is applied before the pin disengages from the tool. On reaching the test force the ballbearings 46 are forced out of the groove 48 in the rod to allow the latch and the body to slide relatively to the rod, thus releasing the pin from the recess 16. The test force is predetermined by adjustment of a nut 32 which tensions the spring 36.
