854,857. Spy-holes. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN [formerly MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE SAINT GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY S. A., DES.]. Feb. 18, 1957 [Feb. 18, 1956], No. 5444/57. Class 20(3) A wall element, for the observation of the interior of an enclosure, having a transparent part set in a cylindrical mounting 4, Fig. 2, and movable about its axis X X<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, in a framework 5, 6, of corresponding shape in the wall 1 of the enclosure, has the transparent part of rectangular form with its major dimension parallel to the axis X X 1. The wall 1 has a rectangular opening 2 to receive the framework 5, 6, the opening and framework being correspondingly stepped as at 3. The mounting 4, which is supported by bearings 16, 17, on the framework 5, 6, has annular contours 19, 20, on its upper and lower faces which engage corresponding contours 13, 14 of the framework, the latter being formed by a member 5 having a base 9 and two vertical parts 8 to which a cover plate 6 is screwed. A cavity 21 passes diametrically across the mounting 4 with successive rectangular transverse sections of increasing dimensions from the outside to the inside of the enclosure, the cavity 21 being closed by glass sheets 24, 25, and filled with liquid paraffin or other liquid of the same refractive index as the glass, slabs 23 spaced about 1 millimetre apart being provided in the cavity. A sheet of glass 28 may be provided to isolate the enclosure completely from the exterior, the movements of the transparent element then being effected by an appropriate mechanism.
