[Also in Group VIII] A washing machine with a motor driven gyrator has a tubular sheathed heating resistor 7 sandwiched between two metal sheets 6, 9 forming a wall or part of a wall and preferably the base of the vessel, and the sheets are joined together, e.g. by welding to enclose the the heater 7 which is received in a groove in one or both plates. When one sheet only is grooved, the heater 7 is flattened at 8 to contact the ungrooved sheet 6. The sheets may be of stainless steel, vitreous-enammelled mild steel of aluminium and the grooves are formed by rolling or pressing. One sheet may form an integral part of the vessel ; or the sheets after welding may form the base of a vessel releasably sealed at its outer edge to the wall of the vessel by a gasket and by nuts and bolts passing through the metal layers and extending down to support a reflector, Fig. 2 (not shown). As shown, the outer edge of the lower plate 9 is bent down and a reflector is attached thereto by peripheral screws 12a. The reflector 12 has a hole 14 allowing escape of water and has indented parts 12b in its top rim 16 for escape of hot air. The gyrator 2 is supported on a centre post 3 sealed to the vessel by gaskets 4a tightened by a nut 4b. The gyrator is driven by a motor in a base 5. The reflector has a central aperture spaced around the post 3 and forms with the base of the vessel an enclosure for the heater. The heater may be applied to an automatic washing machine with means for at least partially drying after washing, e.g. by rotating a bowl or by tumbling a bowl while heating its contents. A thermostat may be inserted in a pocket on the wall 6 within the vessel. The Provisional Specification refers also to sterilisers and other electrically heated vessels.
