Abstract

854,192. Purifying gases. NORTH THAMES GAS BOARD. March 20, 1959 [March 20, 1958], No. 9018/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 55 (2). In a. process of reducing the organic sulphur content of a combustible gas containing hydrogen and not more than 100 p.p.m. hydrogen sulphide the gas with an oxygen content up to 1.5% is passed at a temperature between 300-400‹ C. over a catalyst promoting oxidation of organic sulphur compounds, and when necessary the catalyst is regenerated in situ by treatment with inert gases containing not more than 2% at a temperature not exceeding 600‹ C. to burn off carbonaceous material deposited on the catalyst, the catalyst being then converted into its active form by contact with a hot stream of the gas to be purified. The catalyst may be molybdenum di-sulphide or a subsulphide of cobalt or nickel supported on pieces of fired white china clay. The inert gases used in the regeneration may comprise nitrogen, carbon dioxide or recycled regeneration waste gases, oxygen being added as necessary, and preferably preheated to a temperature between 400-450‹ C. Heat exchange is effected between gases passing to the vessel containing the catalyst and gases leaving it and additional heating of the unflowing gases is effected by combustion of oil or producer gas controlled by a temperature controller in the catalyst containing vessel. Specifications 489,398 and 529,711 are referred to.
