[Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for priming a diesel engine with a volatile combustible liquid such as ether comprises a closable receptacle 10 or 47 for receiving a capsule (not shown) containing a charge of the liquid and adapted to be connected to an air inlet passage of the engine and a plunger 30 or 51 having a capsule-piercing projection 31 or 50 and a formation which as the plunger is depressed co-operates with the walls of the receptacle to collapse the capsule and positively expel its contents. In Fig. 1 the upper end of the body 10 is shaped to receive a bayonet catch fitting 20 to enable the pump barrel to be detachably secured to the body 10. The plunger 30 can be given a series of strokes which by drawing in air through the valve 28 and compressing it progressively increases the pressure in the recess 11 to force the ether through the non-return valve 12 and pipe 13 into the air inlet passage of the engine. In Fig. 3 detachably connected to the body 40 at the mouth of the recess 41 is a bayonet type cap 46 which secures in detachable manner a combined receptacle closure and a plunger guide 47. Also mounted in in the body 40 is an air pump comprising a barrel 52 an air inlet valve 53 and a plunger 54 provided with a pistol type grip 55. The pump is double acting. The arrangement may be used with an engine of the kind requiring more than one capsule to start it.
