Abstract

854,113. Cleaning pipes. WOODALL-DUCKHAM CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. June 9, 1959 [July 10, 1958], No. 22211/58. Class 99(2). A pipe decarbonising apparatus, e.g. for cleaning the elbows 6 of riser pipes 5 of a horizontal coke oven battery, comprises a rotary abrading element, means for driving the element and means for supporting the element adjacent the pipe to be decarbonised, the element being free to move relatively to the supporting means in the direction of the axis of rotation of the element and transversely thereof, whereby the element may be advanced into or withdrawn from the pipe and, whilst in the pipe may be traversed around and along the interior of the latter to effect decarbonising thereof. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the apparatus consists of a decarbonising head 9 universally pivotably supported on a bracket 10 fixed to a carriage 11 reciprocable in guide rails on a charging car of the coke oven battery. The head 9 comprises a rotary abrading head 28 including centrifugally operated peripheral flails 31 and a wire brush 30 and secured to a shaft 19 which is mounted in bearings 17, 18 in a tubular housing 15 and is coupled to an electric motor 22 fixed to the housing 15 and provided with a handle 33. The shaft 19 is of heat resistant steel and the bearings 17, 18 are of sintered cast iron impregnated with molybdenum disulphide. Radial vents 34, 35 are formed in the housing 15 and an impeller 36 mounted on the shaft 19 circulates cooling air through the housing. In a modification, the head 9 is mounted in a gimbal ring 45, Fig. 9, carried by a bracket 46 suspended from the charging car. In a further modification, not shown, the abrading head 28 is driven by an electric motor through a flexible shaft passing through the housing 15, the latter being mounted in a gimbal ring supported on a bracket fixed to the charging car or in a bearing readily detachable from the bracket.
