Abstract
853,994. Extracorporeal treatment of blood. DERVEAUX, R., and ZACONTO, F. Dec. 4, 1956 [Dec. 6, 1955]. No. 36994/56. Class 81 (2). In apparatus, for rapidly varying the temperature of the body, in which blood is circulated in an extracorporeal circuit, the circuit comprises a blood take-off hose 3, a thermic exchanger 11 in which the blood is heated or cooled as required, a return hose 15 and at least one pump. For cooling the head, blood passes from the superior vena cava 2 of a patient through a hose 3 to a tank 4 arid is then directed through a heat exchanger 11 by a pump 6. After passing through an oxygenator 40, the blood is returned to the carotid artery of the patient by way of a hose 15. Tanks 25, 26 of brine maintained at about -40 ‹C. and 65 ‹C., respectively, are connected by valves 27, 28 with a mixer 31. The amounts of brine permitted to flow from each tank 25, 26 to the mixer 31 are chosen so that the resulting mixture has such a temperature, measured by a thermometer 37, that the blood in the heat exchanger 11 can attain the temperature desired. The brine mixture flows into the heat exchanger 11 which comprises brine tubes 24 surrounding capillary tubes 10 for the blood. The brine flows into a container 36 from the heat exchanger 11. Pressure gauges 18, 19, 20 measure the pressures of the blood on leaving and entering the body and the differential pressure across the heat exchanger 11, respectively. The temperature of the blood on entering and leaving the heat exchanger 11 is measured by thermometers 38, 39 which are so connected with the mixer 31 that the supply of brine to the heat exchanger 11 ceases when the blood reaches the temperature desired.
