Abstract
1,266,199. Refrigeration. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 6 May, 1969 [9 May, 1968], No. 22980/69. Headings F4H and F4U. A closed fluid circulating system for cooling apparatus 8, e.g. a cryo-surgical instrument or vacuum plant, comprises a pump 6 for circulating helium or hydrogen through a heat exchanger 2 associated with a cold source 7, e.g. a refrigerator, a duct 3, a heat exchanger 4 associated with the apparatus 8 and a duct 5. The system also includes a cold store 9 in the form of a regenerator having a by-pass 10, the flow of cooled fluid to the store and by-pass being controlled by a slide valve 12. Further bypass ducts 13, 16 connecting the ducts 3, 5 are controlled by slide-valves 14, 18 to control fluid flow to the heat exchangers 4, 2 respectively. A heating device 19 is mounted in the duct 16 to supply heated fluid to the apparatus 8 when required. In operation, cold is stored in the regenerator 9, the fluid passing through the circuit but by-passing the heat exchanger 4 through the duct 13 until required when valve 14 is opened and the fluid passes through the regenerator to supply cold to the exchanger 4 for a given period at a constant low temperature and at a rate greater than that possible by the refrigerator alone. In various modifications, the relative positions within the system of the cold store and valves are altered.
