Abstract

<PICT:0853745/IV(a)/1> A method of extruding tubular films from thermoplastic materials comprises extruding the molten material 3 from an annular orifice 1 into a passageway 6 interiorly bathed with a cooling liquid 11 flowing in the same direction as the tube, maintaining a gas pressure between the inside and outside of the tube sufficient to hold it against the inside of the passage 6 and, at least during the "start-up procedure", solidifying at least the surface of the tube by one or more jets 4 of cooling liquid directed inwardly on to the tube around the circumference thereof. Gas is passed into the tube 3 from a passage 2 to inflate it and the extruded tube passes between rollers 13 and pinch rollers 14. The passageway 6 is cooled by fluid in a chamber 7 and the liquid on the surface of the tube may be removed by a device 12, as described in Specification 822,704. Examples of pressures, temperatures and thermoplastic materials are given. Specifications 741,963 and 840,191 also are referred to.
