Abstract

862,966. Films. DOW CHEMICAL CO. June 28, 1957 [July 11, 1956], No. 20471/57. Class 2(2). Films are made from polystyrene, polyvinyltoluene, or copolymers of styrene or vinyl toluene with one another or with alphamethylstyrene or acrylonitrile by supplying the polymer in homogeneously molten condition at from 170-200 ‹C. and advancing it toward a downwardly directed tube-forming extrusion orifice having a vertical axis, cooling it during its advance and extruding it in tubular form through the orifice at a constant lower temperature of 130‹C. to 170‹C., conducting the extruded tube downwardly through a non-reactive gaseous atmosphere at a temperature at least 40 ‹C. below the heat-distortion point of the polymer and thence through the nip of a pair of horizontally disposed pinch rolls, maintaining an air bubble trapped within the tube between the pinch rolls and the extrusion orifice under a small but positive superatmospheric pressure, of sufficient volume to stretch the tube radially to the desired extent before it is cooled below its heat distortion temperature, and driving the pinch rolls at a peripheral speed greater than the linear rate of extrusion of the tube to effect about as much longitudinal stretching in the hot tube as the amount of radial stretching effected by the entrapped air bubble. Preferably the polymer is cooled to a constant temperature in the range 140-155‹C. just prior to extrusion, and the non-reactive gaseous atmosphere is still air. As shown, the polymer tube may be passed through a guide ring, concentric with and larger than the orifice but smaller than the ultimate diameter of the inflated tube, positioned beneath the orifice to fit slidably about the moving tube. The guide ring may be internally cooled. A suitable guide ring is disclosed in Specification 862,967. The inflated film may, as shown, be collapsed by two converging banks of horizontal guide rolls, and radiant or convected heat may be applied to the tube over the area nearest the pinch rolls, to remove wrinkles.
