853,669. Pliers. HEIDENWOLF, H., and BIERMANN, H. G. Jan. 17, 1957 [Jan. 17, 1956], No. 1745/57. Class 61. [Also in Group XXV] Pliers for setting blind rivets consisting of a hollow rivet 4 flanged at one end and a shank 2 extending through the rivet, the shank having a weakened portion 3 and an enlarged tapered head 1, comprise a pair of pivoted lever arms 14, 15, one arm providing an apertured abutment 14a against which the rivet flange engages with the shank extending through the aperture and the other arm serving to displace a chucklike jaw into which the shank 2 is secured whereby operation of the pliers serves to upset the non-flanged end of the rivet by drawing the shank head 1 into the unflanged end of the rivet and thereafter snapping off the shank at its weakened portion 3. The chuck-like jaw is provided by a lever 5 apertured at 5a to receive a wedging jaw 6, the latter being spring loaded towards the shank 2 by a blade spring 7. The lever 5 is mounted for parallel movement relative to the axis of the shank 2 by parallel links 9, 12 which are swingable about respective pivot pins 10, 13 fixedly secured to the arm 14. The arm 15 is provided with a slot 16 through which extends the pivot pin 10, the arm 15 being connected to the arm 14 by a pivoted link 18 through which passes the pliers pivot 17. Movement of the lever 5 after snapping of the shank serves to displace the wedging jaw 6 to free the shank 2 and cause ejection of the latter. An adjustable stop 21 is provided to engage the front surface of the parts being riveted. The spring 20 tends to separate the arms.
