[Also in Group XVII] A method of hinging a handle 1 to a container 2 comprises passing through an aperture in the container wall, from the outside, the shank of a rivet 5 having a cylindrical head 6, setting the inner end of the rivet shank on to a washer 10 applied to the inside face of the container body so that the shoulder 8 of the cylindrical head is held firmly against the outside of the container body and so that the rivet shank is expanded within the aperture in the body, pivotally mounting an apertured end of the handle upon the cylindrical head of the rivet and forming on the outer end of the rivet head an external flange, rim or projection 16 for retaining the handle on the rivet head. The outer end of the rivet is recessed to facilitate formation of the flange, rim or projection 16. The riveting operation is carried out in an automatic riveting machine wherein the can body 2 and washer 10 are assembled on a spring-supported sleeve 11 surrounding and slidable over the anvil 12 of the machine, alignment being effected by a spring- loaded pin 13. The rivet is inserted and the riveting effected by a plunger 14 co-operating with the anvil 12. The handle is next placed on the cylindrical heads of the rivets and each head deformed with a tool 15 to form the retaining flange or rim 16. Wire handles with ends bent into the form of eyes may be used.
