Abstract

[Classes 65 (ii) and 89 (i)] [Also in Group VII] Hollow rivets for use in blind-riveting and made of relatively soft material, e.g. aluminium alloy, are fitted with an external sleeve of material such as steel to increase the shear strength of the rivet. The sleeve Fig. 1 may be a press fit on the rivet 3 and is preferably shorter than the combined thickness of the plates 13 15 when riveted. The setting mandrel 9 is weakened to break below the head 11 when not required to remain in the finished joint, but where watertight joint is needed, to break at 19, Fig. 4, when the head 17 has been formed. The rivet need not have an initial head 7, with heads being formed during setting by the means described in Specification 613,882, [Group VII]. In a modification the sleeve 23, Fig. 6, extends under the rivet head by a flange 27 and initially completely covers the rivet so that the head formed during setting is substantially covered also. In other forms the head of the mandrel engages a hard washer pressed into a recess in the end of the rivet, or the recess may contain a slot for engagement by a threaded headless mandrel..Another rivet has a sleeve with a tapered end 107, Fig. 11, to engage and expand a cap 97 that covers the upset end of the rivet. When the rivet is to form a pivot for a part 149, Fig. 16, connected to a member 151, the sleeve 133 is longer than the thickness of the part. If the rivet is to be free to turn in both parts sleeves 155, 157 arranged as shown in Fig. 18 are employed. The sleeve may be mounted in a recess in the rivet. Specifications 303,126.
