Abstract
734,604. Rivets and bolt hole &c. bushes. NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION, Inc. Sept. 2, 1952, No. 22066/52. Class 89(1). [Also in Group XXII] Relates to high strength tubular rivets for use in blind riveting and consists in a rivet having a uniform bore for the greater part of its length, e.g. to the point 12, Fig. 4, beyond which the diameter reduces forming a curved wall of radius R considerably greater than that of the bore and struck from a centre located as at 13. The rivet has a flange 9 to form either a countersunk or an ordinary head and the bore has a countersink 10 and raised rim 11. The rivet is inserted in the plates &c. to be connected and a pin 1, Fig. 3, of diameter equal to that of the bore 3 but having an end 8 with a sharper curvature than that of the bore, is driven in expanding the rivet beyond the far side of the plates. The pin has a head formed at 7 to seat in the rivet at 10 and bevelled at 6 so that the rim 11 may be pressed down to retain the pin in place. The rivet may be of stainless steel and the pin of hardened steel and the curvatures are so selected that a radial stress is set up that strains the rivet beyond the elastic limit whilst the longitudinal strain is within it. The rivet end may have a series of grooves 16 of gradually increasing depth to increase the hold of the expanded end. The body of the rivet may be knurled or otherwise roughened. When the rivet is to be used as a bushing the head is left plain and the pin is formed without head and is driven right through or if the hole be blind a longer pin is used so that it may be withdrawn after driving.
