Abstract

402,813. Setting and making tubular rivets. HUCK, L. C., 541, Lincoln Road, Grosse Pointe Village, Michigan, U.S.A. June 8, 1932, No. 16159. Convention date, June 17, 1931. [Class 43.] A method of securing a tubular rivet comprises inserting the rivet with a shank or mandrel therein in an opening in a structure to be riveted, and while an end thereof is held against expansion exerting compressive forces thereon by longitudinal movement of the mandrel to bulb outwardly a portion of the tubular member between the said end and the structure to form a head having an annularly uninterrupted wall. A rivet comprises an outer tubular member 10, Figs. 4 and 5, and an inner shank member 13, and is secured by gripping the projecting portion 16 of the shank and pulling it outwards while supporting the head 11 with an abutment, thereby bulbing a portion 19 of the tube. The shank, which is a force fit in the tube or secured thereto, may be cut off flush with the head 11. The shank may be recessed at 22 to form a lock between the two members in the riveting operation. The head 11 may be omitted and the tube extended at 25, Fig. 6, a second corrugation 27 being formed in this case. In a further modification the diameter of the tube is reduced over a short length at its outer end, a corrugation 37, Fig. 10, being initially formed at this portion after which the main bulbed portion 40 is formed as in the other modifications. Screw threads or grooves 35 on the shank co-operate with similar formations on the gripping tool. The shank is adapted to break at the necked part 32, the bevel 34 corresponding to the surface of the head 11. A rivet may be formed by drawing the two members through a die 52, 53, Fig. 13, to force an enlarged end 50 into a groove 22 in the shank. A similar step may be effected by rolling or swaging. Alternative methods of holding the end against expansion comprise rolling or hammering an enlarged end 60, Fig. 17, to reduce it to the diameter of the rest of the body and to strengthen it, or heat treating the end. Details of the dimensions of the rivets are given in the Specification.
