Abstract

853,617. Fluid actuation of switches. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON-HOUSTON. Jan. 25, 1957 [Jan. 25, 1956], No. 2772/57. Class 38 (5). A tank partially filled with liquid for cooling apparatus immersed therein is combined with a safety device having means responsive to a fall in liquid level in the tank below a predetermined point to operate an alarm and/or protective control for the apparatus, and means responsive to an increase in pressure of the gas above the liquid to operate the alarm and/or protective control and/or release of the excess gas pressure. The apparatus in the tank may be a transformer or the electronic tube described in Specification 706,209. As shown, the safety device comprises a float 1 fixed to a tube 7 which is open at its lower end to the liquid in the tank 3 and which opens at its upper end into a vessel 4. The lid 5 of the vessel 4 is connected by a rod 19 to a mercury switch 18. The tube 7 is vertically slidable within the boss 12 of a valve 8 which rests on a seat 9. If the liquid level falls, the corresponding downward movement of the float causes actuation of the switch 18 via the tube 7 and the rod 19. If the liquid level rises, the liquid passes up through a clearance space 11 between the tube 7 and the valve 8 and through a bore 9<SP>1</SP> in the valve to an outlet 25. An increase in pressure of the gas above the liquid forces liquid up the tube 7 into the vessel 4 until the weight of liquid in the vessel overcomes the buoyancy of the float and the rod 19 pulls the switch 19 down to actuate it. A large increase in gas pressure causes the valve 8 to lift from its seat 9 and vent some of the gas through the aperture 15.
