Abstract

A process for the production of a gum mass containing agglomerates of finely divided gum particles having improved water dispersibility comprises mixing gum particles with an aqueous solution which hydrates the gum at a rate not greater than half the rate at which it is hydrated by water alone, and forming the mixture into said agglomerate-containing mass. Specified gums are guar, locust bean, honey locust, flame tree, paloverde, tara, cassia, occidentalis, tragacanth, karaya, sassa. arabic, and carboxymethyl cellulose. The aqueous solution may contain methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, acetic acid, citric acid, bone glue, animal glue, sucrose, water soluble or gel-forming starch, the chlorides, carbonates or sulphates of sodium or potassium, calcium chloride, calcium hydroxide phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid or ammonia.
