A fence for a circular saw is adjustable about three mutually-perpendicular axes and has two depressible gauges 13, 15 for use in slot or dovetail cutting. The fence plate 1 is adjustable about a horizontal axis on a back plate 2 by means of a pin and slot connection and blocks 2b and the back plate has curved wings 2a slidable vertically and arcuately in a slideway 3 which is adjustable about clamping pins 21 on pillars 4a rising from a base 4. The face plate is held centrally on the back plate by an adjustable slide 18 engaging a pin 19 and the back plate can be held in its angularly adjusted position in the slideway 3 by adjustment of stops 20 on the clamping pins 21. The fence plate carries a pair of work supports 10, 10a, one on each side of a saw slot 25, and a pair of gauges 13, 15 on adjustable slides 12, 14 on the support 10 are slidable vertically against the action of a light spring 16. The base may be secured to a saw bench or may itself form the bench. In use, a workpiece on the supports 10, 10a is placed against the first gauge 15 and the fence plate is moved down the slideway 3 against the action of a spring 6 until an adjustable stop 8 determines the depth of cut. The fence plate moves back under the spring action and, after depressing the gauge 15, the workpiece is moved up to the second gauge 13 and a second cut made. The material between the cuts is then removed by one or more saw cuts.
