Abstract

852,510. Microwave resonators and attenuators. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 12, 1957 [March 3, 1956], No. 6746/56. Class 40(8). An attenuator for suppressing undesired oscillations in a waveguide or cavity resonator comprises a resistive load connected to the source of oscillations by a circuit which presents a high impedance to oscillations of the desired frequency and a lower impedance to those of the undesired frequency. The attenuator is connected -to the source (e.g. the toroidal cavity of a klystron) either by a low-impedance probe or by a loop 1 which is integral with the central conductor 2 of a coaxial transmission line having an outer conductor 3. The transmission line terminates in a resistive load 4 composed of a body of lossy material housed in a tubular extension 6 of the conductive end member 5. The line comprises two quarter-wave sections 7, 8 each resonant at the frequency of the desired oscillations, the section 8 having a characteristic impedance about ten times greater than that of section 7. Section 8 presents a high impedance to the desired frequencies, this high impedance being transformed by the section 8 into a virtual shortcircuit at the point 9. Undesired frequencies are transmitted to the load and absorbed.
