Abstract

852,497. Laminates; electric-insulating paper. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELECTRISKA A.B. Sept. 9, 1958 [Oct. 7, 1957], No. 28840/58. Classes 96 and 140. [Also in Group XXXVI] An electrical conductor is provided with a layered insulation, built up of an electrically insulating material wrapped around the conductor, the insulating material comprising a non-porous material of high dielectric strength and a porous backing having an electrical conductivity corresponding to a surface resistivity between 10 and 10<SP>10</SP> ohms. The non-porous material may be mica flakes or a film of synthetic resin and may be attached to the backing with a resin binder e.g. a phenol-formaldehyde, epoxy or alkyd resin. The backing may consist of paper, a fabric or felt of e.g. glass, asbestos, cotton or nylon, or a synthetic resin film made porous, e.g. by perforation, and may be made sufficiently conductive by impregnating with a metallic salt, precipitating the metal by a chemical, photolytic or thermal method, and washing out undesirable residues, e.g. by impregnating paper with alcoholic silver nitrate, exposing to ultra-violet radiation and washing in alcohol, or alternatively by impregnating with suspensions or colloidal solutions of metals, graphite, semi-conductors or similar materials, e.g. by impregnating glass cloth with a suspension of graphite in alcohol and drying.
