Mechanism is provided in a straight-bar machine for carrying a welt transfer bar 1, having a preformed welt thereon, from a conveyer 4 and delivering it into the slides 14 of automatic welt transferring mechanism, and for carrying the empty bar back from the slides, after the welt has been transferred to the needles, and repositioning it on the conveyer. The conveyer 4 has brackets 3 supporting in an open ended slot the ends of a welt bar for each division of the machine. The conveyer after having been loaded at a loading point conveys the welt bars so that one is positioned above each needle bar. In this position the ends of each welt bar is engaged by a slotted carrier 1-1 pivoted to a chain 6 and suitably weighted so that as the chain moves around sprockets 7, 8, 9, driven from an electric motor through a shaft 10 carrying sprocket 7, the bar 1 is lifted from the conveyer brackets 3 and carried down to the slides 14 in which it engages in slots. The chain continues to move downwardly to disengage the carriers from the bar and until the carriers are clear of the welt transferring mechanism, whereupon the motor is stopped and the chain remains stationary. The welt transferring operation is then completed and the slides return to their original position carrying the empty welt transfer bar. The motor is then driven in the reverse direction and the carriers 11 again engage the ends of the welt bar disengaging them from the slides 14 and carrying it back to the conveyer and depositing it in the brackets 3. The electric motor may be controlled from the pattern chain of the machine or from a separate pattern chain or control drum and may transmit its drive through a friction clutch. Also limit switches may be incorporated in the drive to the shaft 10, which may be a chain drive, to control the movement of the carrier chains 6. Specification 814,107 is referred to.
