Abstract

In drying an aerylonitrile polymer aquagel fibre to convert it to a hydrophilic fibre, the polymer containing at least 80% of acrylonitrile, any balance being a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, and the aquagel containing 1-3 parts of water per part of dry polymer, improved results are obtained by applying to the aquagel fibre before drying, 0,75-2,50% (based on the fibre) of an acetylenic glycol opening agent of formula <FORM:0852402/IV(a)/1> <FORM:0852402/IV(a)/2> or <FORM:0852402/IV(a)/3> or mixtures thereof, wherein G is an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms and Y is a cyclizing linear polymethylene unit forming with its attached carbon atom an alicyclic radical of 5 to 6 carbon atoms; the aquagel is then dried in hot air at 100-150 DEG C. for 30-5 minutes. Specified glycols are 2, 5-dimethyl-3-hexyne-2, 5-diol, 3, 6-dimethyl-4-actyne-3, 6-diol, 4, 7-dimethyl-5-decyne-4, 7-diol, 2, 4, 7, 9-tetramethyl-5-decyne-4, 7-diol and 1, 1-ethynylene-dicyclohexanol. The opening agent may be applied by immersing the fibre in a treating bath containing 1-3% of the agent dispersed therein. The fibre may comprise polyacrylonitrile blended with up to 20% of poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrollidone, or of poly-N-vinyl-2-oxazolidinone, poly-N-vinyl-5-methyl-2-oxazolidinone or poly-N-vinyl-3-morpholinone, which may be grafted on to the polyacrylonitrite, or the acrylonitrile may be grafted on to the polymer. Specifications 729,382, 732,008, 748,954 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,140,921, 2,425,192, 2,648,593 and 2,648,649 are referred to.
