Abstract
In the production of conjugated diolefines by the catalytic reaction of a lower monoolefine having up to six carbon atoms with formaldehyde or acetaldehyde at elevated temperature in the vapour phase in the presence of a surface active clay catalyst or a synthetic petroleum cracking catalyst, the catalyst is periodically reactivated by contact with an organic liquid. The catalyst may be a surface active clay, e.g. montmorillonite or fullers' earth as described in Specification 826,545 or a synthetic petroleum cracking catalyst, e.g. silica-alumina as described in Specification 826,546. They are extracted with the organic liquid in the reactor or removed from the reactor at up to the boiling point of the liquid or higher temperatures and raised pressure. Suitable liquids are benzene, toluene, acetone, methylethylketone, propylene and butylene liquid polymers and copolymers, naphthenic hydrocarbons and gasoline and petroleum fractions. An example illustrates the extraction in a soxhlet extractor of a silica-alumina catalyst with benzene.
