Abstract
Solutions of ammonium salts, obtained by removing sulphur oxides from combustion gases by means of solutions containing free ammonia, are treated in a continuous process to recover ammonium sulphate and elemental sulphur, by continuously passing the solution under pressure through two conversion vessels arranged in series. In the first vessel the solution is heated to about 312 DEG F. and in the second stage the solution is maintained at this temperature for a sufficient time for the major part of the ammonium salts to be converted to ammonium sulphate and sulphur. The total time in the vessel is preferably 1/2 to 1 1/2 hours. In an example, the solution from a storage tank was pumped into a primary heat exchanger at a pressure of 96 lbs./sq. inch and was brought up to a temperature of 312 DEG F. in 15 minutes heat being provided by a steam supply. The solution was then passed to a secondary heat exchanger where the temperature was maintained at 312 DEG F. for 47 minutes. The pressure at the exit of the second exchanger was 93 lbs./sq. inch.
