Class 81(2) [Also in Group XXIX] An emergency oxygen supply system for high altitude use incorporates a supply valve which is released to open when a mask is taken from its storage position for use. The equipment is normally housed in a container 24, Fig. 1, with the face mask 16 held by a clip 32 on the hinged door 26. The mask is connected to the supply valve 10 through a breathing bag 14 and flexible tube 12 but a projecting stem 88 of the valve is held down, to keep the valve closed, by a blade spring 38 bearing down on a ball 36. This ball is connected to the mask by a cord 34, or other linkage, so that when the mask is pulled clear by the user, the ball is pulled away from its seating and the valve is allowed to open, so passing oxygen to the mask. Oxygen is supplied to the valve through a conduit 46, Fig. 5, which is clamped over the tubular valve body 58 by a cap nut 62. It passes through a cut-away portion 70 to the bottom of the tubular body and then up through a filter element 74 to the valve seating. The sliding valve head 84 normally closes this owing to the spring 38 pressing the ball 36 down on to its stem 88, but, as soon as the ball is disengaged, the valve is opened by upward pressure of a spring 561 and oxygen passes out through the connection 55 to the face mask. In one modified form, Fig. 12 (not shown) the ball is replaced by a wedge-shaped key while in another, Fig. 13 (not shown) the ball is formed as part of the flexible air tube.
