Abstract

The invention comprises dyes obtainable by coupling a diazotised amine of formula:- <FORM:0851537/IV (c)/1> where D is a benzene residue that at the most is bicyclic, with a naphthol sulphonic acid coupling in a position vicinal to the OH group, the products having at least two groups selected from carboxylic and sulphonic acid groups. The dyes may also be made by condensing appropriate aminodyes and cyanuric halides. Preferred coupling components contain an amino, especially an acylamino, group. Halogen is preferably chlorine. Examples of specified components corresponding to D are 4, 41-diaminodiphenyl -3- sulphonic acid, 4, 41- diaminostilbene -2, 21-disulphonic acid, 4-(41-aminobenzoylamino)-1-aminobenzene -2- sulphonic acid and 2-methoxy -1, 4- diaminobenzene -5- sulphonic acid. Illustrative of specified coupling components are 1- and 2- naphthol -5- sulphonic acids, 1, 8-dihydroxynaphthalene -3, 6- disulphonic acid and 2-amino -6- naphthol -8-, 2- phenylamino -5-naphthol -7-, 2- methylamino -8- naphthol -6-and 1- amino -8- naphthol -2, 4- disulphonic acids. Examples of acyl groups of acylaminonaphthol sulphonic acid coupling components are acetyl, b -chloropropionyl, #schloro- and nitro-benzoyl, ethanesulphonyl, p-toluenesulphonyl, carbomethoxy and groups derived from cyanuric acid. The dyes colour cellulosic materials from aqueous alkaline baths and may be used in printing pastes which need developing with an alkali. Numerous examples are given of the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing cellulosic fibres in red, blue and yellow shades. Specification 797,946 is referred to.
