Abstract

851,468. Copying-lathes. MASCHERPA, A. Jan. 5, 1959, No. 429/59. Class 83 (3). A copying-lathe comprises a turret adapted to carry a number of tool-holders, a rotary drum adapted to carry a number of templets each associated with a different tool-holder, the templets extending outwardly from the drum and longitudinally thereof, means connecting the turret and drum so that they rotate in synchronism, and means for causing a tool-holder carried by the turret to follow a path in accordance with the shape of its associated templet. An indexible tool-turret 7, Fig. 1, is carried on an inclined slide 6 which is moved by an hydraulic piston-and-cylinder arrangement 11, 9, controlled by a known feeler-device 20 engaging a templet 43. The turret may be rotated in any manner but in the embodiment described hand rotation is used, a hand lever 23, Fig. 5, being mounted on the turret, and gearing and splined connections 28, 29, 30, 32, 35, rotating a drive-shaft 49, Fig. 6, for rotating the templet-carrier 41 in synchronism with the tool turret. The templet-carrier is provided with a number of angularly-spaced templets 43 corresponding to the tools in the turret. Dogs 66, Fig. 16, may be arranged intermediate the templets on the drum 41, to control parts of the lathe-cycle such as a quick-return movement or stoppage of a motor effecting the longitudinal feed. In the latter arrangement an electric motor drives a pinion engaging a rack for feeding the carriage 4, Fig. 1, supporting the turretslide 6. An alternative form of selector control comprises a replaceable drum 82, Fig. 14, keyed to the indexible supporting-spindle 79 for the templet 41, and carrying a series of buttons 85 arranged to give a desired control-sequence. The buttons may be arranged to operate electric switches or hydraulic or pneumatic valves.
