Abstract

851,256. Steering motor vehicles. KUCH, H., and JACOBI, H. Feb. 11, 1959 [Feb. 12, 1958], No. 4835/59. Class 79(5). A vehicle steering arrangement comprises a manually operable steering wheel control and means for steering the wheels from laterally disposed guide surfaces or from a centrally disposed guide rail comprising horizontally disposed swingable arms carrying track and guide rail engaging rollers. The steerable wheels 8 are pivoted at 9 to a transverse bar 14 slung from the frame 25 by springs 15. Attached to each wheel is a housing 16 in which are pivoted at 1 two arms, 4a and 4b, each carrying a rubber tyred roller 3a and a steel roller 3b. A piston 20 is connected by a rod 6 to a crosshead 19 carrying pins 31 engaging slots 22 in the arms 4 and controls the movements of the arms into the positions A (neutral, to allow manual steering), B or C (Fig. 2), the latter being guide rail or track engaging positions respectively. The piston may be hydraulically, pneumatically, electrically or magnetically controlled.
