Class 20(2) A hydraulic pit prop comprising telescoping tubes 2, 3 pivoted to a reservoir 4 and having a bolted ball 6 has a rotatable sheave 8 mounted in ball bearings in the base 6. A rope or chain 17 anchored to and wound round the sheave 8 is driven by an electric motor applied to a shaft 14 to haul the prop towards a fixed object such as another set prop or an anchored conveyor. The shaft 14 is connected to a gearbox 13, the pinion 16 of which meshes with teeth 11 on the sheave 8. Alternatively a worm drive may be used: The prop is extended by a pump 20 controlled by a valve 23.
