Abstract

850,991. Compressors. STEMPEL-HERMETIK G.m.b.H. Aug. 29, 1958 [Aug. 30, 1957], No. 27826/58. Class 8(1). Prevention of knocking against cylinder end caps 13, 13a of oscillating free pistons 7, 8 connected together by an armature 10 surrounded by an exciter coil 4 supplied with alternating current is effected by making the length of cylinders 1, 2 longer than the piston stroke thereby providing a cushion of compressed gas which assists in effecting the return stroke. In a modification, this cushion is assisted by a coil springs bearing against opposite sides of the armature and against the inner ends of the cylinders and which are so dimensioned that when running under no load the natural frequency of oscillation of the assembly is reduced to that of the current frequency. In operation gas is drawn through an inlet duct 16 and traverses one or other of bores 11, 11a of the pistons controlled by valve plates 12, 12a and is discharged through the corresponding valve plates in the cylinder caps.
