Abstract

Oiling agents for use in treating leather (see Group VIII) are prepared by oxidising wool fat, alone or in admixture with one or more other oxidisable fatty oils or fats such as train oil or sperm oil with air or oxygen at 50 DEG -120 DEG C. for 8-55 hours and either simultaneously or subsequently agitating the wool fat or oxidation product thereof as the case may be with a saturated or almost saturated aqueous alkali metal bisulphite solution or with an aqueous suspension of an alkali metal bisulphite or pyrosulphite until the reaction product is such as will give a colloidal solution in water. Preferably an electrolyte resisting emulsifying agent is added before or during the oxidation or the sulphite treatment in an amount of up to 10% by weight, such as a portion of the product of a previous run, an oxyethylated fatty alcohol, a condensation product of an alkyl-phenol with ethylene oxide, a C8-10 alkyl sulphonic acid salt or a highly sulphonated fatty acid. The wool fat used may be a crude fat containing free or neutralised fatty acids. The bisulphite or pyrosulphite treatment is preferably effected at 40 DEG -100 DEG C. When the oxidation is carried out in the presence of the bisulphite, bisulphite is preferably used in excess and added portionwise. In Examples : (1) air is passed through crude wool fat at 75 DEG C. for 55 hours and the product reacted with aqueous NaHSO3 and the resulting oiling agent separated from the aqueous and solid salt phases; (2) a mixture of wool fat and codliver oil or sperm oil is similarly oxidised and then reacted with aqueous sodium pyrosulphite.ALSO:Oiling agents for use in treating leather (see Group VIII) are prepared by oxidising wool fat alone or admixed with other oxidisable fats or fatty oils with air or oxygen at 50 DEG -120 DEG C. for 8-55 hours and simultaneously or subsequently agitating the wool fat or oxidation product thereof with a saturated or almost saturated aqueous alkali metal sulphite solution or with an aqueous suspension of an alkali metal bisulphite or pyrosulphite, until the reaction product is such as will give a colloidal solution in water. Preferably an electrolyte-resisting emulsifying agent is added before or during the oxidation or sulphite treatment step in an amount up to 10% by weight, such as a portion of the product of a previous run, an oxyethylated fatty alcohol, an ethylene oxide-alkyl phenol condensate, a sulphonated fatty acid or a C8-C10-alkyl sulphonate. These agents may also be added subsequently to the product. The sulphite treatment is preferably effected at 40 DEG -100 DEG C., the temperature being not below 50 DEG C. when the treatment is effected simultaneously with the oxidation. In examples: (1) wool fat is air blown at 75 DEG C. for 55 hours and then reacted with aqueous NaHSO3; the product which forms an emulsion with water is admixed with a polyglycol ester of train oil acids and water giving a paste for use in oiling leather; (2) a mixture of wool fat and codliver oil or sperm oil is similarly oxidised and then treated with aqueous sodium pyrosulphite.
