Abstract

Fatty acids having at least six carbon atoms and containing at least one double linkage which has been subjected to elaidinization, and a strongly hydrophillic group are used in aqueous treating baths for fibrous materials such as textiles and leather. By "strongly hydrophillic group" is intended a group, other than a carboxylic group, which renders the fatty acid soluble in water. The water solubilizing, group, which preferably contains sulphur or phosphorus, may be introduced into the fatty acids, for example, by treating the fatty acid with a compound containing a water solubilizing group, e.g. taurine, or by sulphonation. The elaidinized compounds improve the wetting, emulsifying and detergent properties of the treatment liquids and may be used in association with soaps of elaidinized fatty acids. In examples: (1) a washing agent is obtained by condensing elaidic acid with taurine; (2) a foaming agent is prepared by condensing the sodium soap of linolelaidic acid (obtained from linoleic acid) with ethionic acid; (3) the sodium soap of ricinolelaidic acid is reacted with glycolchlorhydrin and sulphonated; after removal of excess acid and neutralization, a wetting and foaming agent is obtained; (4) the sodium soap of the butyl ether of ricinolelaidic acid is treated with glycolchlorhydrin as in example (3) to give a wetting and foaming agent; (5) ricinolelaidic acid is sulphonated and neutralized. Specified elaidinized fatty acids which may be used are those containing halogen or ester or ether groups or side chains of the aliphatic, aromatic, alicyclic or heterocyclic series which may be attached by means of carbon, oxygen or sulphur.ALSO:Fatty acids having at least six carbon atoms and containing at least one double linkage which has been subjected to elaidinization, and a strongly hydrophillic group are stated to have detergent and emulsifying properties. A "strongly hydrophillic group" is defined as a group, other than a carboxylic group which renders the fatty acids soluble in water. The water solubilizing group may be introduced into the fatty acids by esterifying the carboxylic group with hydroxyethanesulphonic acid, or by condensing with taurine. Specified elaidinized fatty acids which may be used are those containing halogen or ester or ether groups or side chains of the aliphatic, aromatic alicyclic or heterocyclic series which may be attached by means of carbon, oxygen or sulphur. The elaidinized fatty acids may be used in association with soaps of elaidinized fatty acids.
