Abstract

850,033. Crimping yarns. LAWSON & SONS Ltd., R. P. Feb. 17, 1959 [Feb. 18,. 1958], No. 5182/58. Class 120(3). In a method of bulking continuous filament yarn by compression in a heated tube to crimp permanently the individual filaments, a predetermined volume of yarn is fed into and withdrawn from the tube by pairs of rollers rotating at differential, synchronised speeds and the yarn, during its passage through the tube in a compressed state, is subjected to dielectric or high frequency heating. As shown in Fig. 1, the tube comprises a section A of non- metallic material having low electrical conductivity and power factor e.g. glass or polytetrafluorethylene, partially surrounded by electrodes of a dielectric heater D, and a metal tube A<SP>1</SP> which serves as both the pressure-creating section and a cooling tube and may be perforated to allow cold air to be drawn across the yarn mass: ends a of the tube are shaped to the contour of feed and withdrawal rollers B and C. A modification, Fig. 2, comprises heated, intermeshing crimping rollers B<SP>1</SP> and a tube b to which hot air is admitted through a tube b<SP>1</SP> in order to preheat the yarn and to assist its conveyance through the apparatus. The tube may be tapered towards the withdrawal end.
