A method of fixedly securing electric contact tags to base-boards corsists in feeding a strip of tags each having locating shoulders intermittently step-by-step to a machine which acts to sever the tags successively from said strip and to locate each tag for engagement througn a hole in a base-board so that the shoulders engage one face of the board, and thereafter deforming a part of the tag against the other side of the board so that the tag is positively gripped against both faces of the board. Each tag comprises a wide central portion 3 with shoulders 6 (Fig. 3), a part 4 which is connected to the carrier strip 2 and a tongue 5. As each tag enters the machine it is acted upon by a vertically displaceable lower bending punch 8 (Fig. 6) which bends the tag through 90 degrees and then severs the tag from the strip by means of a shearing-blade 9 attached to the puncn. The lower end of the tag is gripped between the punch 8 and a fixed anvil 10 and a printed circuit board is engaged over the upstanding tag with the tag shoulders 6 abutting the underside of the board. A hollow upper punch 11 is lowered over the tag to deform the corners of the wide portion 3 against the top surface of the board to secure the tag in position. The board is then removed by hand and lowered over the next tag which has been bent up and sheared from the strip. The punch is guided between blocks 13 and 14 and operated by a compressedair cylinder 15a controlled by valves 17 which also operate an air cylinder 18 for actuating the upper punch 11. The feed mechanism comprises a feed-block 19 fitted with a depressible spring-loaded feed-pin 20 for engaging successively in pilot holes in the tag strip and a stationary block 23 which is also fitted with a spring-loaded pin 24 for holding the strip against longitudinal movement when the feed-block returns in a non-feeding direction. The feedblock is secured to a reciprocable actuating- plate 25 formed with a cam slot 28 through which projects a pin 29 connected to the pistonrod of the air cylinder 15a. During downward movement of the punch the actuating-plate and feed block are moved in the feeding direction to bring the next tag into position, whereupon the retainer pin 24 snaps into a hole and locates the strip. As the punch moves upwardly to bend and sever the tag the cam slot returns the plate and feed-block to their original position.
