Abstract

The invention comprises: (a) alkali metal, calcium and barium salts of dichlorocyanuric acid; (b) the preparation of dichlorocyanuric acid by forming a solution of cyanuric acid in an aqueous alkaline medium containing two equivalents of alkali per mol of cyanuric acid, adding chlorine until substantially two mols thereof have reacted with each mol of cyanuric acid, and recovering and drying the precipitated dichlorocyanuric acid (or by the alternative processes set out below); and (c) compositions containing a chlorinated cyanuric acid with at most 38% by weight of active chlorine content (see Groups III, IV(c) and VI). Dichlorocyanuric acid may also be prepared by chlorinating cyanuric acid with an inorganic or organic hypochlorite or other compounds yielding chlorine or hypochlorite ion, or by reaction between trichlorocyanuric acid and cyanuric acid. Salts may be prepared by reaction with metal hydroxides, oxides or salts, or obtained directly by effecting the chlorination in the presence of excess alkali. In examples, cyanuric acid dissolved in sodium hydroxide is chlorinated to various percentages of "active chlorine", one product neutralized with caustic soda being identified as the dichlor product; an insoluble barium salt, a soluble calcium salt and numerous compositions are described.ALSO:Bleaching preparations, e.g. for cellulose pulp or textile bleaching or for household use, contain a chlorinated cyanuric acid capable of releasing not more than 38% by weight of active chlorine and comprising dichlorocyanuric acid or a salt thereof, which may be admixed with unchanged cyanuric acid or with a minor amount of trichlorocyanuric acid. Other ingredients that may be added are alkali metal compounds, e.g. salts such as silicates, phosphates, sulphates, carbonates or chlorides, or hydroxides, or surfaceactive agents, preferably of the anionic or nonionic type, e.g. alkyl-arylsulphonates, alkyl sulphates or polyalkylene p oxide condensates. Solid compositions may be prepared by mixing the ingredients with water and removing substantially all the water from the mixture, e.g. by spray drying or by allowing the water to form a hydrate with one of the ingredients.ALSO:Cleansing compositions, e.g. scouring powders, laundry and dish-washing detergents and disinfecting detergents, contain a chlorinated cyanuric acid capable of releasing not more than 38% by weight of active chlorine and comprising dichlorocyanuric acid or a salt thereof, which may be admixed with unchanged cyanuric acid or with a minor amount of trichlorocyanuric acid. Other ingredients that may be added are alkali metal compounds, e.g. salts such as silicates, phosphates, sulphates, carbonates or chlorides, or hydroxides, surface-active agents, preferably of the anionic or non-ionic type, e.g. soaps, alkylarylsulphonates, alkyl sulphates or polyalkylene oxide condensates, fillers, e.g. sodium sulphate, clay or pumice, and siliceous abrasive materials.
