849,397. Splitting-machines. BERTRAND, E. A. G. May 21, 1959 [Sept. 6, 1958], No. 17302/59. Class 31 (1). In a machine for splitting hides and skins in which the material 18 is fed between a bar 4 and a roller 17, an optical viewing-device 2, e.g. a microscope, is provided for ascertaining the position of a band-knife 6 relatively to the bar 4, the device 2 thus facilitating precise adjustment of the position of the knife. The axis of the device 2 is arranged in the plane 3 of one face of the bar 4. The eyepiece of the device 2 has a graticule centred on the plane 3, the span of the graduations of the graticule being larger than the bevel of the knife, so as to enable the width of the bevel to be ascertained. The knife is supported at its rear edge by two pushers 12, 13, Fig. 5, bearing against conical wedges 14, 15 which are moved by means of a wheel 16 to advance or retract the knife. The knife is sharpened by means of a pair of rotatable grinding-wheels.
