Abstract

849,258. Fusible cut-outs. COX, J. E. Dec. 22, 1958 [Jan. 3, 1958], No. 335/58. Class 38(1) In a cartridge fuse comprising a cylindrical porcelain body 2 having end portions of reduced diameter 8, 9, a copper sleeve 11 lying between an end-cap 3 and portion 8 defines, with these parts, an annular passage 16 containing neoprene ring 17 to provide a gas, water and oil-tight seal. Sleeve 11 is integral with flange 12 to form cap 13 and makes an interference fit with portion 8. Ring 17, when unstressed, has an axial length equal to that of passage 16, an internal diameter equal to that of portion 8 and external diameter somewhat greater than portion 9. When cap 13 fits on portion 8 ring 17 stands proud of groove 16 and is compressed by cap 3 to fill spaces 22, 23 created by bevelled edge 24 of cap 13. Cap 3 makes a direct interference fit with portion 9 and indirectly through sleeve 11 with portion 8. The core supporting the fuse elements is held within arc-quenching quartz powder by supports welded to a U-shaped conducting member welded to flange 12, at 39. In a second embodiment flange 12 is omitted, the U-shaped member being welded to sleeve 11 (Fig. 3 not shown). A third embodiment is identical with the first except that portion 8 is of greater, and portion 9 of less, axial length so that there is no interference fit between cap 3 and portion 9 (Fig. 4 not shown) Specification 692,627 is referred to.
