Abstract
692,627. Fusible cut-outs. COX, J. E. July 19, 1951 [Aug. 11, 1950], No. 20026/50. Class 38 (i). In a cartridge fuse, end caps 4, Fig. 1, are secured on the tubular insulating casing 1 by resilient sealing rings 3 located in annular grooves 2 in the casing (or caps) and which are deformed by forcing the caps on to the casing. A helical fuse wire 12 is wound on a porcelain core 6 supported within the casing by spigots 10 formed on inner end caps 8 to which the wire is welded and which fit resiliently over re-entrant portions 9 on the end caps 4. One of the spigots 10 houses an indicator 13 of the spring-pressed plunger or explosive capsule type which is released by a subsidiary fuse wire 17, the indicator plunger 15 penetrating a perforable portion 16 of one end cap 4. The casing is filled with marble powder 20. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which packing washers 22 are compressed between the ends of the casing 1 and the end caps 4, and outer end caps 24 containing further washers 23 are pressed over the caps 4. In this embodiment the core 6 has cemented thereto sleeve terminals 25 for the fuse wire 12, said terminals fitting over inturned spigots 26 on the caps 4. An indicator housing 27 has an enlarged end 28 slit at 29 to grip internally one of the spigots 26. The indicator may have spaced rings on its outer surface, Fig. 5 (not shown), which are adapted to be engaged by spring arms to retain the indicator in its blown position. In a further modification, Fig. 7, sleeve terminals 25 supporting the core 6 are secured to the caps 4 by circlips 41 and the fuse wire comprises sections 33, 34 of different cross-section welded together in series at 35. Fig. 8 shows a fuse having two fuse wires in parallel, each formed of sections 33, 34 of different gauge supported by the filling 20. The ends of the wires are welded to thimble 36 which are a push fit on the reentrant portions 26 of end caps 4. Insulating sleeves 37 placed round the thimbles 36 prevent leakage of the filling 20. In Figs. 7 and 8 the fuses are shown without indicators.
