Abstract
849,246. Percussive tools. BROOM & WADE Ltd., BROOM, H. S., and JAMES, E. B. March 26, 1959 [April 1, 1958], No. 10494/58. Class 124. A pneumatic percussive tool having a valve operated by the ratio of supply air pressure to the pressure in the cylinder, has at least one cushioning air chamber in connection with the cylinder at the end remote from the tool steel, the connection being through a metering hole of small dimensions relative to the air chamber. As shown, a pneumatic tool has a piston 51 operating in a cylinder 12, an anvil 45 transmitting the blow to a steel 48, and a valve 28 of cup shape having a flange moving between two seatings 26a and 26b. The valve is held in position with the flange seating on 26b by the pressure of compressed air entering through a valve 18, in this position the piston is driven upwardly. When the piston head 53 passes an exhaust port 55 air is compressed above the piston and some of this pressure is relived by air passing through one or more metering holes 57 leading to cushioning air chambers 56 situated near the top of the cylinder. The air admitted to the air chambers delays the time when the pressure above the piston is sufficient to change-over the valve and admit compressed air above the piston and drive it downwardly. It is stated that the " kick " on the reversal of movement of the piston is reduced without impairing the force of the blow.
