Abstract

An aqueous corrosion inhibiting composition which may constitute with a suitable antifreeze agent an I.C. engine coolant, or which may be used in a cutting oil emulsion, contains from 1 to 500 parts per million of a compound of structure:- RX(CR1R11)nCOOY, in which R is an alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl group, X is oxygen or sulphur, R1 and R11 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups, Y is a metal, preferably an alkali metal, or an unsubstituted or substituted NH4 radical and n is a whole number. Phenoxyacetic acid salts, particularly sodium or ammonium para-nonylphenoxyacetate are very suitable for use in the composition. Salts of phenylmercaptoacetic acid and those having a structure:-R1-X-CH2COOY, in which R1 is an alkyl group, X is oxygen or sulphur and Y is as above, such as sodium tetradecyloxyacetate may also be used. The anti-freeze agent in the I.C. engine coolant may be glycerol or a glycol such as ethylene glycol. The cutting oil emulsion may contain lubricating oil and an emulsifying agent such as sodium dodecyl sulphate, "Teepol" or "Lissapol NK" (the words "Teepol" and "Lissapol" are Registered Trade Marks).
