Abstract
A composition which can be vulcanised at room temperature is made by malaxating 100 parts (by weight) of a liquid linear diorganopolysiloxane, having a viscosity between 5,000 and 500,000 cs. at 25 DEG C. and containing at least 0,1% by weight of Si-bonded OH groups, 5 to 50 parts of a finely divided filler other than ZnO, and 10 to 50 parts of ZnO, and heating the mixture at 50 DEG to 200 DEG C. The siloxane may contain Si-bonded alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or aralkyl radicals. The mixture may be heated either in an open vessel to permit escape of volatiles or in a closed vessel. Conventicnal fillers are specified, though combustion silica should preferably constitute at least part of the filling material. An organic amino compound serving as a vulcanisation catalyst, e.g. diethylaminoalcohol, ethylhydroxypiperidine or an ethanol amine may also be added before the malaxation, or before the heat treatment or afterwards to the cold mixture. In Examples (1) a dimethylsiloxane oil containing 0,15% by weight of Si-OH groups was made by heating at 150 DEG C. in nitrogen octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane and aqueous KOH. Water was added slowly in fractions to the resulting hot oil, and after cooling, the KOH was neutralised by adding silica to yield a liquid from which volatiles were removed by heating in a current of nitrogen. The resulting liquid was then mixed with combustion silica, diatomaceous earth, ZnO and iron oxide ; after cold malaxation for 1 1/2 hours a further quantity of the siloxane was added and the mixture heated for 2 hours at 135 DEG C. After cooling, diethylaminoalcohol was incorporated to give a paste which was converted into an elastic solid in 2 1/2 minutes after incorporation of methyltriacetoxysilane ; (2) a methylphenylsiloxane oil prepared and malaxated as in (1) gave a paste which set to an elastic solid in 3 minutes after mixing with methyltriacetoxy silane. After storing for 15 months, the setting times of the pastes were unaltered. Uses : for taking dental impressions. Specification 803,262 is referred to.
