Abstract

The cis-isomer separated from a mixture of trans- and cis-isomers made by condensing a 1 : 4 : 5 : 8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid with ortho-phenylenediamine is brominated by adding a mixture of glacial acetic acid, bromine and hydrochloric acid to a slurry of said cis-isomer and water and maintaining the temperature thereof at from 60 DEG to 100 DEG C. for from 20 to 40 hours, or chlorinated by introducing chlorine into a homogeneous suspension of said cis-isomer in water and hydrochloric acid at a temperature of 80 DEG to 100 DEG C. until the product contains 17-18% of chlorine. Examples are given.
