Abstract
848,670. Pleating fabrics, sewing machines, adjusting garment lengths. WYNDHAM. G. A. M. Oct. 18. 1957 [Oct. 24, 1956], No. 32440/56. Classes 112 and 141 A method of forming from a flat strip a pleated strip with its folds arranged in stepped relation, as described in Specification 748,375, comprises moving said flat strip to converge the latter into longitudinal corrugations, decreasing the width of and increasing the depth of said corrugations to form substantially flat superposed consecutive folds, stepping said corrugations so that consecutive folds are superposed each above the other, and then stitching adjacent the extremity of each fold and through any folds thereunder to fasten together a consecutively increasing number of folds. Fig. 15 shows a pleated strip having three stepped folds 20 secured together by three lines of stitching 21. The pleated strip may be attached to the edge of a garment or article, and the latter may subsequently be lengthened by an amount equal to one, two or three folds by respectively unpicking one, two or three lines of stitching. A folding guide adapted to effect the pleating in advance of the needles of a sewing machine comprises a vertical plate I which tapers from an inlet end 7 towards the outlet end, and is provided on one side with longitudinal corrugations 5 which progressively converge and become narrower and deeper towards the outlet end. The respective edges of plate 1 are formed with opposed, horizontal flanges 2, 3 to which are attached transverse corrugated guide strips 4a, 4b, and resilient fingers 8a, 8b bear on the plate between the corrugations thereon. At the outlet end the corrugations communicate with horizontally disposed passages formed in a member 6, to complete the pleating operation. A horizontal attachment flange 12 is provided.
