Abstract

848,431. Loud-speakers. TANNOY Ltd. Jan. 19, 1959 [Dec. 13, 1957; Jan. 10, 1955], Nos. 38848/57 and 1023/58. Class 40 (4). In a moving-coil loud-speaker, at least the output stage of a transistor amplifier is combined with the driver unit to constitute a single unitary component. The invention is described as applied to a re-entrant horn loud-speaker of which the horn 1 is interchangeable by employing the construction described in Specification 703,810. The driver unit 2 includes a domed diaphragm 10 driven by a speech coil (not shown) co-operating with the pole structure 11, and is enclosed in a casing 12 which is continued at 13 to enclose the amplifier 3. The amplifier components are mounted in two groups 14, 15 on a copper plate 16 constituting a partition between the driver unit 2 and the amplifier 3. The plate 16, which acts as a heat sink for the power transistor 17, is cooled by air set in a state of turbulence by the diaphragm 10. To this end the pole structure is held together by a hollow tube 20, as described in Specification 703,809, through which tube the air passes. The plate 16 may be provided with holes or louvres so that the air circulation may extend to the cavity bounded by the plate 16 and the cover 13.
