Abstract

The water repellency of textile materials is improved by immersing them in an organic solvent solution comprising an organopolysiloxane fluid and an ester of zirconic acid in which the ester groups are aliphatic or aromatic groups having not more than 18 carbon atoms, and thereafter exposing the treated textile materials to such a temperature and for such a time as to develop water-repellent properties. The solvent may be toluene, acetone, white spirit, trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene or mixtures thereof. The organopolysiloxane may contain 1,1 to 2,1, preferably 1,1 to 1,8 organo groups per Si atom. The organo groups may be, e.g. methyl, ethyl, phenyl or cresyl. Methyl hydrogen polysiloxanes are preferred. The ester may be tetrabutyl zirconate, tetra-2-ethylhexyl zirconate, di-isopropoxy tetramethylenedioxy zirconium, tetraphenyl zirconate or tetrakis-cis-octadec-9-enyl zirconate. Optional ingredients in the composition are an organopolysiloxane of a resinous or adhesive nature, and a catalyst for the further condensation of the organopolysiloxane, e.g. stannous oleate, stannous 2-ethylhexoate or zinc 2-ethylhexoate.
