Abstract

Porous materials are rendered water-repellent by impregnation either successively or simultaneously with a hydrolysable silane or the hydrolysate thereof and at least one polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate or adducts thereof, e.g. bisulphite addition compounds. The organosilicon compounds may contain silicon-bonded alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkenyl and preferably are polysiloxanes containing methyl and/or phenyl radicals alone or in admixture with methyl hydrogen polysiloxanes with or without catalysts, e.g. as in Specifications 680,265 and 708,821, [Group VIII], branched-chain polysiloxanes or siliconates. Catalysts specified are zinc octoate, dibutyl tin dilaurate or maleate, zirconium thiocyanate and butyl and ethanolamine titanates as described in Specification 708,821. The organosilicon compounds may be applied from the vapour phase, as an aqueous emulsion or as an organic solvent solution, and the isocyanate &c. may be applied as an aqueous emulsion or organic solvent (e.g. white spirit) solution, while the adducts may be applied in aqueous solution. Many di- and tri-isocyanates and isothiocyanates are specified.
